Last week on our blog we shared Queen’s University Intranet Design Annual submission which explained why their intranet is an invaluable business tool that is easy to use, visually appealing and intuitive.

Today Jay Ketchaver, Network Administrator at Fathom, takes us through their NNGroup contest submission to enlighten our readers on how this marketing firm uses their intranet to give employees the tools they need to get work done.

Goals of the intranet:

Fathom’s intranet, powered by Intranet Connections, was designed to be a centralized location in which to find everything an employee could need.  Our company priorities and handbook are easily accessible, as are general information items such as forms, reports, the IT Support Desk, and links to other services we use.

Features and description of user tasks the site supports:

The intranet is further divided into departmental sections.  Each department is responsible for the upkeep and general design of their section.  Department-specific tasks, goals, and priorities are commonly housed in these areas.

Number of users and geographic locations of those users:

The site supports all of Fathom’s 130 employees, including online marketing specialists, web developers, public relations specialists, and account executives.  Most employees are based in our Valley View, OH headquarters, with satellite offices located in Columbus, OH, Detroit, MI, and San Diego, CA.

Design Usability- We’ve strived to keep a sleek, slim design that makes locating information easy. The home page’s top banner is continuously changing to reflect our quarterly themes.  Links to many of our other services are easily accessible.
