Intranet Tips from the Intranet Connections Team

To SharePoint or to SharePoint Alternative?

As one of the Product Specialists here at Intranet Connections, (a sharepoint alternative product), I have seen many examples of organizations who implemented a SharePoint platform with high hopes, only to wind up frustrated when confronted with its many unanticipated costs and challenges. When I ask “why did you decide to go with SharePoint in the first place?” The answer I often get is “because everyone else uses it” or “because the initial costs were quite low.”

SharePoint can be a high functioning, beneficial platform for your organization. However, if you jump in with both feet uninformed of the potential challenges, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise down the road.  Here are a few ways to tell if SharePoint is not for you:

A Recipe for a Wildly Successful Intranet

Greetings fellow intranet fanatics! Welcome to my fourth blog entry for Intranet Connections. It’s an absolute honor speaking to you good people and I’d like to thank you in advance for tuning in.

For those that do not know me, I am Maz. I work exclusively with our client base to ensure their utmost satisfaction when it comes to the discussion, implementation and maintenance of their intranet solutions. I feel blessed to have been placed in such a position. I mean, I get to see the birth, life and death of so many intranets. It’s so dramatic and epic all at the same time! OK – enough with the showboating; let’s get to the goodies.

Believe me when I say that I’ve seen a ton of successful and not-so-successful intranets! My goal today is to share an exercise that I believe will help intranet administrators create, build and maintain a successful intranet.

Bank Intranets Do Better Business

It was Wednesday morning and I had just hit the office after battling the Edgemont Village crowd piling into Starbucks for their morning caffeine fix. I ran up the stairs and plunked down my Starbucks cup to find an invitation to attend a bank intranet tour with Ephrata National Bank from Ephrata, PA.
We LOVE Banks
Banks are awesome customers. We have over 260 customers in the financial sector who have purchased Intranet Connections and many of them, like Ephrata National Bank, have been on our intranet software for coming up on a decade. We feel fortunate and amazed to have such terrific customers.

Employee Recognition on Your Intranet

Are you building an employee recognition rich culture?  You should be. According to a recent article in Forbes magazine, creating a ‘recognition-rich culture’ can increase employee retention by up to 31%. Now that is a number worth investing in. Employee recognition should not just be based on seniority or years-served. It should happen much more frequently.  Employee recognition should also reward performance and actions that support company goals and initiatives.  How is this currently being done in your business?

Build Workplace Culture Through the Intranet

Reed Coleman’s strategy for rolling out New Season Market’s first intranet was based on two principles:

It must build upon workplace culture
It must remain simple & easy-to-use

As the new Internal Communications Manager at New Seasons Market, it was critical for Coleman to come in with a strong strategy and execution plan for deploying their first company intranet.

The Chronicles of CUNA: Rebuilding an Employee Intranet

The Journey Begins
Once upon a time (November 6th, 2006), in the land of the Wisconsinites, an intranet was born. It was truly a beautiful sight – no pun intended. This intranet belonged to none other than Credit Union National Association (CUNA). Very quickly, the collaboration beast became the star-child among CUNA’s collection of internal business tools. Primarily, the employee intranet was being used as a way for the HR and Finance departments to deliver forms to their fellow employees. And, it was great.

Sadly enough, over the course of six years, the intranet had become quite stale and out-of-date. This was especially detrimental as it was causing the organization to lose faith in their, once star-child, business tool.

In November 2012, a foot was put down, however. Nita McCann, of the IT department at CUNA, had come to a realization: The intranet was becoming increasingly difficult to manage and something had to change.

Your Intranet Name & Corporate Culture Go Hand in Hand

What can an intranet name do for your intranet and corporate culture? Your intranet name can be a strong driver for employee engagement on your intranet. If your intranet is named – The Mind Melt, that isn’t going to build confidence with your employees that this is a good forum for collaboration and communication.
