When I ask “why did you decide to go with SharePoint in the first place?” The answer I often get is “because everyone else uses it” or “because the initial costs were quite low.”

SharePoint can be a high functioning, beneficial platform for your organization. However, if you jump in with both feet uninformed of the potential challenges, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise down the road.  Here are a few ways to tell if SharePoint is not for you:

Even the Fluffiest Cloud Can House a Storm: Intranet Best Practices

As the Sales Manager here at Intranet Connections I get a lot of questions from prospective clients on intranet best practices and installation.  One question that seems to be popping up frequently during my intranet discussions is: “Can I put Intranet Connections in the cloud?” The answer to this absolutely, yes, but I have to ask….do you really want to?

There are arguments as to why the cloud is a good option for a place to house your intranet, including low maintenance and included tech support.  However, putting your intranet in the hands of a provider can also lead to

The History of Intranet Software and How It’s Evolving

Intranet software has come a long way over the last twenty years.  Current products, such as Intranet Connections, provide users with a wide variety of functionality including everything from a centralized document repository to custom forms to social networking tools.  Today, intranets tie together different parts of a business and provide an avenue for employees to communicate and share information quickly and efficiently.  Early intranets weren’t quite so well integrated into the businesses that were using them, but their introduction was intended to solve many of the same problems they are used to solve today.

Is it Time to Break Up with Your Intranet?

The bond you and your employees have with your intranet is an intimate relationship. As such, you have standards that your intranet must meet in order for that relationship to continue unrestrained. Is your intranet meeting your standards?

A Recipe for a Wildly Successful Intranet

Greetings fellow intranet fanatics! Welcome to my fourth blog entry for Intranet Connections. It’s an absolute honor speaking to you good people and I’d like to thank you in advance for tuning in.

For those that do not know me, I am Maz. I work exclusively with our client base to ensure their utmost satisfaction when it comes to the discussion, implementation and maintenance of their intranet solutions. I feel blessed to have been placed in such a position. I mean, I get to see the birth, life and death of so many intranets. It’s so dramatic and epic all at the same time! OK – enough with the showboating; let’s get to the goodies.

Believe me when I say that I’ve seen a ton of successful and not-so-successful intranets! My goal today is to share an exercise that I believe will help intranet administrators create, build and maintain a successful intranet.

Agile Development for Intranet Software

Buzzwords seem to be more popular in the IT industry than perhaps any other.  Usually they’re thrown about to sound informed, or in marketing campaigns to attract attention. A number of more recent ones come to mind off the top of my head: the cloud, virtualization, social software, big data, and Web 2.0.  But perhaps one of the most popular in the last few years centers on software development methodology: Agile Development.

What does it mean when a software company says they are Agile?

Does Your Intranet Save Trees?

While enterprise social tools are the hot topic of late and certainly add value to a social intranet, it’s important to remember that your intranet should also contain core tools to help employees do their jobs. A key task-based application for the intranet is an online form builder.

“A form builder is hardly the sexiest tool out there. But think about it….how many forms do your employees fill out each day?

How Effective is Your Intranet in an Emergency?

We have previously blogged about the role your intranet can play during an emergency, namely the H1N1 pandemic last year. This week Martin White, founder of Intranet Focus Ltd, wrote an article about intranet support for emergency planning in light of the volcanic ash from Iceland and air flight ban in Europe.

Martin spoke to a number of his clients and found that users were rushing to find documents on the
